Open Meetings

Though open meetings law varies from state to state, many of the general principles apply in all states. It is the policy of most states that the public is entitled to the fullest and most complete information regarding the affairs of government as is compatible with the conduct of governmental business. To implement and ensure the public policy of the specific state, all meetings of all state and local governmental bodies are publicly held in places reasonably accessible to members of the public and shall be open to all citizens at all times unless otherwise expressly provided by law.

In many states, governmental bodies are required to hold open meetings in places which are accessible, without assistance, to persons with disabilities, while local governmental bodies are required to hold meetings in places which are accessible with or without assistance to persons with disabilities.

An open meeting is losely defined as the convening of members of a governmental body for the purpose of exercising the responsibilities, authority, power or duties delegated or vested in the body.
